There are two main groups of label printers; the method of printout defines this division: thermal and thermal transfer.

Thermal printout is achieved by using thermal sensitive paper containing wax with a dye, which when heated changes its colour. The label is moved under the thermal print head which emits releases the dye from the label. In the case of thermal transfer technology information can be printed on the labels produced from different materials such as paper, cardboard, foil and textile. It is very thin foil coated with a mixture of a dye and wax, resin or wax and resin. The ribbon is placed between a print head and a label. Thermal printers are widely used both in office and industrial environments. Choosing the right printer depends on daily consumption of the printed labels.
